Description

Description:

Hydrangea macrophylla is a species of flowering plant in the family Hydrangeaceae, native to Japan. It is a deciduous shrub growing to 2 meters tall by 2.5 meters broad with large heads of pink or blue flowers in summer and autumn.

Hydrangea macrophylla blooms can be blue, red, pink, light purple, or dark purple. The color is affected by soil pH. An acidic soil (pH below 7) will usually produce flower color closer to blue, whereas an alkaline soil (pH above 7) will produce flowers more pink. This is caused by a color change of the flower pigments in the presence of aluminum ions which can be taken up into hyperaccumulating plants.

Hydrangea Plant Care

The plant is easy to grow and does not require constant attention. Here are some pointers that you can use to care for them.

  1. Do not expose your plants to direct afternoon sunlight, or this may burn the leaves of your hydrangea plant.
  2. Just like too much sun, the cold freezing temperatures in Himalayan states can adversely affect or may even kill the plant. So make sure to transfer the plant indoors, if growing it in a pot, or cover it with a cloth when the temperatures start falling.
  3. While pruning, prune only the stems that flowered in the current year, otherwise, you may not have any flowers at all in the next season.
