Furcraea Plant Description

  1. Common Names:

    • Mauritius Hemp
    • Giant Cabuya
    • Green Aloe (though it’s not a true aloe)
  2. Scientific Name:

    • Furcraea foetida (one of the most common species)
  3. Appearance:

    • Features long, sword-shaped leaves that grow in a rosette formation.
    • Leaves are either solid green or variegated with creamy white or yellow stripes, depending on the variety.
    • The leaves are thick, rigid, and have smooth or slightly serrated edges.
  4. Size:

    • Can grow up to 3–6 feet tall and spread out to a similar width when mature.
    • In the right conditions, the plant may develop a tall flower stalk (up to 25 feet) with small, white, bell-shaped flowers. This flowering is rare and often marks the end of the plant’s lifecycle (monocarpic).
  5. Growth Habit:

    • It is a rosette-forming succulent that does not climb or trail.
    • New offsets (baby plants) may form around the base after flowering, allowing propagation.
  6. Light Requirements:

    • Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
    • Ideal for outdoor gardens in tropical or subtropical climates.
  7. Watering Needs:

    • Drought-tolerant once established and prefers well-draining soil.
    • Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot.
  8. Temperature and Humidity:

    • Prefers warm temperatures between 65–90°F (18–32°C).
    • Not frost-hardy and should be protected or grown in containers in colder regions.
  9. Uses:

    • Ornamental: A striking focal point for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or tropical landscapes.
    • Fiber Source: Historically, fibers extracted from the leaves are used for ropes, mats, and textiles.
  10. Toxicity:

    • Generally considered non-toxic, but the sap may irritate the skin. Handle with care when pruning.
  11. Care Level:

    • Low-maintenance, making it ideal for beginner gardeners or areas with minimal rainfall.
