Description
Eggfruit Botanically known as Pouteria campechiana. This is an evergreen, small sized tree of the family Sapotaceae. The fruits are about the size of an apple, yellowish to orange in color with somewhat mealy pulp similar in appearance and texture to a cooked egg yolk enclosing often a single large seed. The Egg fruit/ canistel produces orange-yellow fruit, also called yellow sapote, which are edible raw. Canistel flesh is sweet, with a texture often compared to that of a hard-boiled egg yolk.The egg fruit comes up well in tropical and subtropical climate.
